Buyers are running the journey themselves and calling in humans at decisive moments. That redraws the seller’s job around what AI can’t provide: accountable judgment.

Here are a pair of findings that look contradictory, but aren't: in Gartner research presented this spring, 67% of B2B buyers said they prefer a rep-free experience. In the same body of research, 69% said they turn to sales reps to validate AI-generated insights. Buyers want humans out of the process and essential to it at the same time.

Information and judgment are different products

The contradiction dissolves once you separate what buyers used to need reps for from what they need them for now.

For decades the rep's core product was information: what the product does, what it costs, how it compares. AI and digital self-service now deliver that faster, at midnight, without a discovery call. What AI cannot yet deliver is accountable judgment. When a buying committee has done its research with a model's help, someone still has to look a human in the eye and confirm the insight holds for their specific situation.

Gartner's Robert Blaisdell framed the shift precisely: the seller's role is moving from primary information source to a source of validation and confidence at key points in the journey. His advice to sales leaders follows from it: stop maximizing rep involvement across every stage, and concentrate human effort where it adds unique value.

The new division of labor

Played forward, this describes a specific architecture for go-to-market. The scale work, answering, demonstrating, calculating, onboarding, moves to autonomous systems that are available whenever intent shows up. The human work concentrates into fewer, higher-stakes moments: validating the committee's conclusions, navigating the politics of a big decision, and building the relationships that survive renewals and reorgs.

This isn't a demotion for salespeople, not by a long shot. But it is a promotion with worse job security for anyone who was really just a talking datasheet. The reps who thrive in the validation era are the ones buyers actively want in the room, and the vendors who thrive are the ones whose autonomous layer is good enough that when a human does show up, the buyer's confidence is already halfway built.

The 69% figure is the most encouraging stat a CRO will read this year, on one condition: that the humans it describes have been freed from the work machines now do better, and pointed at the work only humans can do at all.
